Who We Are

Bronx Health Sciences High School opened its doors in September 2004 to approximately 100 incoming 9th graders.  BHS provides a rigorous but individualized college preparatory curriculum in which science and health education play a very important role.  Our school offers students an approach to learning that prepares them for situations they will encounter in college, the world of work, and their adult communities.

In order to enable our students to apply these skills outside of school, BHS students are required to complete a total of 420 hours of health-related community service.  All incoming 9th graders must complete a service project in one of many community agencies with which the school has or will establish partnerships.  For students who are ready to take on increased academic challenges in their years to follow, BHS will offer Advanced Placement (AP) courses, and the opportunity to gain college credit through Lehman College - our lead partner in education.

While traditional testing will be used, our students' performance will be largely assessed through interdisciplinary projects, completed individually and in groups.  This closely mirrors the demands of higher education and he way in which adults are evaluated in the workplace.  Tasks will be assigned, leadership roles must be assumed, and deadlines must be met as students collaborate to complete the project.  BHS is committed to preparing its students to meet high standards which are assessed rigorously and consistently.

At BHS students and teachers will aim to make sense of the complexity of the world and themselves.  We seek to develop creativity, strength, and integrity existing within each child.  Our goal is to give our students the opportunities and the resources to find meaning and success in their lives, as they define these in consultation with their parents and teachers.  We believe that students are more likely to discover meaning in a curriculum that cuts across traditional subject borders.  Interdisciplinary projects provide a chance to discover unifying themes and to make connections that enrich the student's world.

All of the wonderful experiences combined with a safe, nurturing, parent welcoming open-door policy, will bring light and life to New York State graduation requirements.  Students will begin their academic endeavors by taking English, science, mathematics, history and physical education courses in their first year at our school.  Our UNIFORM CODE is mandatory.  High parental involvement is expected as an essential component of student success.  We invite both you and your children to explore Bronx Health Sciences High School as an opportunity for a better tomorrow.  The dedication and hard work that our faculty and staff will offer to your child(ren) will be an investment that will continue to grow for a lifetime.
